Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of workload on the performance of academic staff at a private higher education institution in Aceh, Indonesia. The workload of academic staff in carrying out the Tri Dharma of Higher Education namely education and teaching, research, and community service has become increasingly demanding. In addition, they are required to complete administrative reporting through the SISTER (Integrated Higher Education Resources Information System) platform, which operates within specific reporting and submission periods. As a result, busy teaching schedules often cause academic staff to miss these reporting deadlines. Furthermore, work motivation varies among academic staff, particularly between those who have obtained lecturer certification and those who have not, as certified lecturers are required to fulfill academic credit targets for career advancement. This study employed a descriptive quantitative and qualitative approach using questionnaires with a five-point Likert scale and semi-structured interviews involving 35 academic staff members, including teaching staff, Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Senior Associate Professors from various academic disciplines. The findings indicate that the workload of academic staff is categorized as high (mean score = 3.9 out of 5) and has an influence on their performance (mean performance score = 3.6). The interview results further support the survey findings, revealing that the accumulation of Tri Dharma responsibilities, limited time for completing SISTER reporting, and differences in work motivation associated with lecturer certification status are important factors affecting academic staff performance. The findings are expected to provide useful insights for higher education administrators in managing academic staff workloads more proportionally and effectively.
